Elite Edge | Week 63

It’s officially performance review + bonus season — the time of year when corporate America quietly decides who’s valued, who’s invisible, and who gets labeled “exceeds expectations” versus “meets expectations.”

This week, I’m giving you the frameworks that actually move compensation and promotion decisions, especially when:

  • your skip-level barely knows your name

  • your manager is overwhelmed and underselling you

  • and you’re still writing in effort language instead of impact language

Let’s get into it.

🔥 1. The Truth About Bonus Season (No One Will Tell You This)

Your bonus is not a reflection of how hard you worked.
It’s a reflection of:

  • your visibility

  • your narrative

  • your sponsorship

  • and your impact clarity

Not the hours you spent suffering on Slack at 11pm.

Leaders reward the people they understand — not the people who worked the hardest.

🔥 2. When Your Bonus Disappoints — Do This, Not That

Don’t say: “I worked really hard.”
Don’t say: “I feel undervalued.”
Don’t say: “I deserve more.”

Instead, ask:

  1. “How was my rating calibrated against peer groups?”

  2. “What business outcomes limited my rating?”

  3. “What specific results would have changed the rating?”

This shifts the conversation from emotioneconomics.

And economics is the only language bonus committees speak.

🔥 3. Speak in Impact Language (A-Players Use This)

Here’s the communication framework leaders actually respond to:

THE IMPACT LANGUAGE QUAD™

  1. Problem: What wasn’t working

  2. Action: What you did

  3. Outcome: Quantified change

  4. Value: Why it mattered to the business

Example:
“Cut onboarding time by 50%, enabling faster sales ramp and saving ~300 hours per quarter.”

Short. Sharp. Leader-readable.

🔥 4. When Your Skip-Level Doesn’t Care (They Usually Don’t)

They don’t care how stressed you were.
They don’t care how many nights you sacrificed.
They don’t care about “trying your best.”

Skip-levels care about:

  • outcomes

  • risk

  • velocity

  • alignment to their priorities

So speak in their language.

THE 3-LINE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY™

  • Win: What you delivered

  • Impact: Why it mattered

  • Strategic Tie-In: How it supports their agenda

That’s how you bypass layers of hierarchy.

🔥 5. The Q1 Visibility Sprint (Start January 1st)

If you want a promotion in 2026:

  • Lead one cross-functional initiative

  • Share weekly impact updates (short!)

  • Present even once in a skip-level setting

  • Capture screenshots/metrics for your Brag Book

  • Identify one sponsor — not five mentors

Promotions go to the visible, not the deserving.

📚What I Read This Week…

📰 Jeff Bezos Is Back — Pulled Into the Future by AI

Bezos didn’t return for nostalgia — he returned because AI opened a new frontier worth building again. Why it matters:
AI isn’t just automation. It’s invention.
And the people who win the next decade will be the ones who build with it, not fear it.👉🏼 Read here

DEEPALI’S FINAL WORD

Bonus season reveals the truth that most professionals don’t want to admit:

Corporate rewards are not distributed by fairness — they’re distributed by clarity, power, and visibility.

If you want to win, you must:

  • speak in impact

  • communicate in business value

  • show up where decisions are made

  • build sponsors

  • and engineer your visibility intentionally

You don’t need to be louder.
You need to be clearer.

And I’m here to make sure you’re not navigating any of this blind.

You’ve got the Edge. Now sharpen it.

Until next week,
